“Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us."

In each generation, people of conscience must step forward to ensure that liberty survives. The Capital Region Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union works to protect liberty right here in your community.

Protecting freedom takes time, resources and dedicated volunteers -- the Capital Region Chapter needs you. Please join us!

Special Projects - Research and write for newsletters and updates; be part of the speakers' bureau; assisting with the layout on our newsletter; serving as a legislative action advocate.

Legal - Under direction of staff, volunteer attorneys-- practicing or retired -- investigate and research constitutional issues in response to citizen complaints, and help shape the Chapter's advocacy work.

Volunteers Outside the Capital Region - If you are interested in volunteering and you reside outside the greater Capital District, there are ways you can help safeguard civil liberties in your area. Membership drives, information campaigns, event coordination, and keeping the Chapter informed of civil liberties issues in your area are just a few ways that you can volunteer.

Regular Civil Liberties Events

Banned Books Week - Toward the end of September, the Chapter hosts several Banned Book Week events to celebrate the freedom to read books of one's choice and to spotlight continuing efforts to censor free expression.

Anti-Death Penalty Rally - The first Sunday in June, NYCLU Chapters across the State rally against the death penalty. Capital Region Chapter's rally grows bigger each year. Help stop state-sponsored killing in NY before it starts.

Campaign to Stop Police Misconduct and Create Meaningful Citizen Review - The Chapter has advocated for meaningful civilian oversight of police agencies in Albany and Schenectady to address serious persistent allegations of police misconduct and corruption. We have sponsored rallies and other public events and joined with community groups and residents to work for institutional reform to ensure that police agencies throughout the Capital Region respect the civil liberties of all residents.

Protecting Reproductive Rights - The Capital Region Chapter sponsors educational events to highlight current issues in reproductive rights on the national and state level. We continue to monitor threats to the availability of reproductive health care in services affected by hospital mergers, medical insurance inequity, Medicaid funding, and all intrusions into reproductive decision-making by a woman and her physician.

Students' Civil Liberties Issues - The Capital Region Chapter is dedicated to informing young persons of their rights at school and in the community. The Chapter holds workshops informing teens of their rights at school, in the community, and when encountering law enforcement.
